Bespoke Engagement Ring Insurance in the UK: What You Need to Know
Share
A bespoke engagement ring's warranty and its insurance cover two different things, and conflating them is one of the more common (and expensive) mistakes buyers make. Here's the actual distinction, and what to do about it.
Warranty vs insurance: not the same thing
A manufacturer's warranty — Qutahia's is a 1-Year Repair & Resizing Warranty — covers craftsmanship defects and fit issues from the maker's side: a claim that something was wrong with how the ring was made. It does not cover loss, theft, or accidental damage (a stone knocked out, a ring dropped down a drain) — that's what separate insurance is for. Free insured UK delivery, similarly, covers the shipment in transit, not the ring once it's in your possession.
What your diamond certificate is actually for
The independent certification that comes with a larger centre stone (IGI/GIA) isn't primarily a warranty document — it's what an insurer uses to establish the stone's specifications and value when you take out a policy. Keep it with your other purchase records; you'll be asked for it.
Getting the ring insured
Two common routes in the UK: adding it to an existing home contents policy as a named/specified item (usually the cheaper option if your existing insurer offers reasonable per-item cover), or a standalone specialist jewellery insurance policy (often better for higher-value pieces, since specialist insurers are used to jewellery-specific claims and valuations).
What to have ready when you get a quote:
- The independent certificate (for certified larger stones) or the certification you were provided (for smaller stones)
- A recent valuation — your purchase price is a starting point, but insurers often want a formal valuation, particularly for higher-value pieces
- Where the ring will usually be kept, and how often it's worn/travelled with
Common gaps worth asking about specifically
- Whether the policy covers accidental damage (a chipped stone, a bent band) or only loss/theft
- Whether it covers the ring when travelling abroad
- Whether resizing or repair work (even under a maker's warranty) affects your cover
